New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez mapped out a strategy designed in mid-November to recruit nurse practitioners (NP) from bordering states in efforts to strengthen the state’s health care provider workforce. The proposal also hopes to increase the number of graduates from the state’s institutes of higher learning.
Arbitrary and bureaucratic restrictions in other states such as Texas, Oklahoma and Utah limit patients from receiving full access to nurse practitioner care. New Mexico has granted NPs the power to practice to the extent of their education, providing patients with full access to NP care for more than 20 years.
The area allows for full patient care and opportunities for NPs such as:
- Encouraging NPs to independently own and operate clinics throughout the state, and reach rural areas that are in desperate need of health care providers.
- The increase of patient care access leads to fewer delays and lower costs for those in need of services.
- NPs have the authority to refer patients to specialists as well as prescribe medication.
- The state follows the recommendation of leading, independent institutions that endorse NPs as safe, cost-effective health care providers that yield equivalent results as physicians.
The reduction of physician availability, along with an aging population and the rollout of national health care reform has made the expansion of NPs in the workforce essential, to say the least.
New Mexico has made it a point to let NPs know that they view them as full partners in health care delivery and that they recognize the profession as a vital part of the system.
The state has opened its doors to highly-educated, expertly trained practitioners who generally care for the most vulnerable populations such as: the chronically ill and disabled, medically disenfranchised, the underinsured and those who are geographically isolated.
New Mexico is hoping to help NPs help patients.
