Nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) are on the rise this year. Jobs are opening up and wages are rising as more and more graduates enter the workforce to meet the growing demand.
A recent report has shown that NPs and PAs are now among the most lucrative jobs available today, only slightly trailing dentists but leading web developers and even physicians. If you’re looking to jump in and pursue a new career as an NP or PA, now is probably the best time to do it.
NPs on the Rise
According to US News & World Report, NPs are ranked the second best job in 2015 ahead of software developers and behind only dentists. The median salary for a new NP sits at around $92,670 but can rise to as high as $110,130.
Demand has also steadily risen since 2013 with most jobs centered on the metro areas of Columbus, Indiana; Texarkana, Texas; and San Jose, California. The only areas that rank below average, though, are general stress and work-life balance, which is to be expected with most jobs in the medical field.
PAs Not Far Behind
PAs are the tenth highest-ranked job according to US News & World Report. Salaries range from $92,970 to as high as $130,620 a year depending on location and experience. Unemployment rates for PAs also sit around 1.4% with demand steadily rising.
Doctor’s offices, medical and surgical facilities, and outpatient care centers are hiring the most PAs and the highest wages can be found in the metro areas of Sebastian, Florida; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Texarkana, Texas.
