Physician assistants have become a staple in doctor’s offices across the country as demand for primary care workers has increased. The medical industry continues to grow and the rise of PAs has made it even easier to provide the best care to as many people as possible.
What kind of value does a PA bring to the physician’s office? Plenty, ranging from the financial to the practical, making PAs one of the biggest commodities in the medical industry.
The versatility of PAs has made them invaluable in doctor’s offices. They’re trained in the medical model and are required by law to recertify their licenses every 10 years, meaning they are constantly studying across the spectrum of medical specialties.
Their training also leads to valuable versatility. Much like physicians, PAs are exposed to most specialty areas through clinical rotations during training. The product is a worker that can quickly adapt to surroundings in an effort to best serve patients.
PAs have vast experience in major medical specialties. According to the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, the top three specialties for a majority of practicing PAs are family practice, emergency medicine and surgery.
As noted, PAs have the ability to adapt to the specialization needed depending on the practice they work at. The point being, PAs work with physicians as a team to improve care.
A Growing Profession
From 2003 to 2013, the number of certified PAs grew from 43,500 to 95,583. That’s an increase of 219% over ten years. As demographics shift and the Affordable Care Act comes into full effect, demand for medical professionals will increase accordingly. It’s projected that the number of training programs for PAs will increase from 187 to 250 by 2018, meaning more PAs entering the workforce.
Physicians alone can’t meet the rising demand for first class care. This is where PAs come in to fill the gap. There has never been a better time to enter the PA workforce and we at NP PA Recruiters want to help you find the prefect career.
