The medical industry has evolved drastically since the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law in 2010. As health care has become available for more people across the country, demand has caused the industry to adapt.
One of the biggest adaptations has been the overall rise in demand for nurse practitioners and physician assistants across the country. Medical practices are realizing that to provide quality care to as many patients as possible, having NPs and PAs on the team is critical.
Supply and Demand
According to doctor-recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins, nurse practitioners and physician assistants combined rank fourth in their top 20 most requested searches by specialties. NPs and PAs are behind only family doctors, internists and psychiatrists for the most in-demand specialties in the medical field.
Their rankings come from data collected from over 3,100 recruiting assignments handled by the company between April of 2014 to May of this year. This is a huge change considering that as little as four years ago, neither NPs nor PAs were among the top 20. The meteoric rise in demand has been attributed to a change in overall philosophy of care since the signing of the ACA into law.
A Changing Field
Since the adoption of the ACA, private healthcare payments have shifted from fee-for-service type care to more value-based care. Priorities have shifted toward the idea of keeping people well, one that is well catered by the outpatient type of care provided by NPs and PAs. Both fields are dedicated to working as a team with physicians, and this dedication has made it easier to provide better care to more people.
