As doctors look to staff their offices to meet the ever-growing healthcare demand, their concentration is aimed at highly trained nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) to fill their ranks. NPs and PAs are critical in the evolving medical industry, and as such, hiring practices need to adjust, too.
Good hiring and enough supervision reduce the possibility of compliance risks and raise the overall level of care provided. What should a doctor do when looking to hire a new NP or PA, and how should they work to properly integrate them into the practice?
Doctors are looking for the best in health professionals. We can help you get found.
Laying Out the Basics
Doctors looking to hire will be up-to-date on their particular state’s laws and regulations concerning NPs and PAs to properly determine which of the two professions they will need. After that, they’ll provide a job description to detail what the employee will do and how much supervision will be given.
Though not required by law in every state, most doctors will work out a supervisory/collaborative agreement that lays out duties, practice protocols, authority limits and the supervisor’s role. Lastly, your certifications and education will be verified to ensure you meet the proper requirements.
Once hired, the doctor should have a plan in place to properly integrate you into the practice. This includes introducing the NP or PA to the office staff and clarifying their role in the practice when it comes to patients.
They will also want to clarify to patients the capacity in which NPs and PAs will deal with them. Doctors should instruct office staff to notify patients when their appointment with an NP or PA will be, post NP and PA roles on their brochures and pamphlets, and adhere to the requests of all patients who insist on seeing the doctor rather than an NP or PA.
A properly functioning medical practice integrates all staff to ensure the best care is provided to as many patients as possible. When a practice is formed correctly, no one oversteps their bounds and you are used to the best of your ability.
