The shortage of physicians in recent years has been well-noted. This is especially true as more and more people become eligible for health insurance. There has been a huge rush by the medical industry to meet the growing demand.
This has been a benefit for nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) who are perfectly prepared to fill that gap. This not only helps provide more service, but also improves overall efficiency in medical practices.
The numbers prove it. You are in demand, and we’ll help you answer the need for your talents.
A New Standard
Putting it simply, it has become common for non-physicians to provide care at doctors’ offices. According to a recent report by Medical Group Management Association, a trade group for medical administrators and executives, there were 0.85 non-physician providers for every doctor in 2014. This was an overall rise of 40% compared to 2010 when the ratio was around 0.59 per doctor.
The rise in numbers has been gradual for a while but took a huge jump once the Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010. This specifically refers to non-physician providers employed at physician-owned surgical practices. Admittedly, the growth was not as large in other types of clinics, but the report was based on responses from 3,120 medical groups across the nation.
NPs and PAs are taking more patients and responsibility by working with doctors in a multitude of fields. They help boost efficiency as well by taking more patients while allowing those with more complicated needs to be treated by doctors. In essence, patients are getting better care while those needing the most help get attention from a higher-skilled medical expert.
Room to Grow
While currently in a boom, there doesn’t seem to be signs of a hiring slowdown any time soon. What was once overlooked has now become industry standard. Medical treatment ranges from simple procedures to very complicated surgeries, and as more people require care, it’s abundantly clear that resources can now be spread out more efficiently.
