One of the beauties of the nurse practitioner (NP) profession is its ability to serve patients with the relative expertise of a doctor and the patient-first mentality of a nurse. The position is tailor-made for those who excel at bedside manners and love the more intimate interactions with patients to help in their care.
Nurse practitioners can serve in a variety of practices, but for one NP, the chance to work with the elderly has been both satisfying professionally and personally.
As featured in a recent news report, nurse practitioner Diana Bahena described the great satisfaction she gets from working with elderly patients in long-term care facilities. Bahena was a registered nurse after attaining an associate’s degree in nursing before returning to school to earn a Master of Science degree in nursing, which led her to her current position as an NP.
Nurse practitioners are playing a big role in healthcare, and we can help get you in the game.
As an NP at the care facility, her duties are vast and can involve anything from prescribing medication, reviewing labs and treating urgent care complaints. However, it’s working directly with patients where she gets the most satisfaction.
Working with patients in places such as the dementia unit where, despite dealing with a difficult disease, they are able to laugh and smile during therapy. It’s a brief moment of levity that really defines the reason she does what she does.
Like all NPs, schooling and extensive training played a big role in preparing her for the challenges ahead. Experiences like working in the emergency department as a nurse gave her the knowledge needed when providing patient care at critical times.
