The medical field can be highly competitive, so once you’ve been selected as a candidate, you’ll want to play your hand properly. Just as you prepare for your interview, you should also prepare to negotiate the terms of your job offer. It’s not as hard as you may think; all you need is a little confidence and some good research skills.

Don’t Say “Yes” in the Blink of an Eye
Although it can be exciting to get that job offer, saying yes on the spot can hurt your chances at any sort of negotiation. This is a common mistake for those coming right out of school, so be aware and don’t automatically commit to the first offer. Your skills as a NP or PA are in high demand and provide you a vantage point to benefit from some solid, meaningful discussions.
First off, during the interview process, you’ll want to ask about the terms of the job’s salary. If you find that there is room for negotiation, then feel free to utilize this opportunity to give conditional, rather than automatic acceptance of the offer.
Know Your Options
Salaries aren’t the only area where negotiations can be made. Think about the entire compensation package that the company is offering, which can include: vacation time, sign on bonuses, retirement plans, relocation expenses, paid holidays, and similar things of this nature. Most PA and NP contracts have some room for adjustments, so be sure to look into all of them. Start dates are also another area that tend to be overlooked, but remember, you can always ask if a certain time frame would work out for the company. These other areas of negotiation are things that can be discussed and hopefully a suitable compromise can be developed.
Use Your Strategy Skills
When negotiating your salary, you’ll have to be able to intelligently respond should you be questioned about the validity of you deserving more money. This is where you really need to do your research and compare salaries to those with similar experience. Also, take good notes during the entire negotiations process, and remember, just like you are mentally dexterous during a game of chess, you’ll want to be the same when discussing salary terms. Always be ready for the next move so that you can eventually call out “checkmate”.
You must make sure that all negotiations are documented in the proper manner. Keep copies of emails, note telephone conversations, and keep notes organized in a good fashion. Once everything has been properly squared away between you and your future employer, be sure to have them write in stone – so to speak! If there are areas that you both decided were a good compromise, but they aren’t showing up on your final contract, then be sure that it’s taken care of before you sign on the dot. The loose ends can ultimately fall through the cracks and not be recognized.
